Premium Varieties

Hello gardeners! We hope your winter planning season went well. (you have been planning your spring garden, haven’t you?) More now than ever, it is important for you to be food independent, and as a result we’ll have a bumper supply of seedlings available.  Please call for availability though as weather during the next few weeks may affect the supply. IMPORTANT NOTICE! Every Saturday, starting April 31, 10am-2pm, I will be set up at Roscoes, 94 Green River Rd, Zirconia. Click HERE for a map.

All tomato seedlings when available in 3″ pots, $2.00/pot.

Biltmore

Our easiest determinate variety to harvest, due to its jointed stems and manageable habit. Fruits, which ripen uniformly over a short time, are large, 8 to 10 oz. globes. Earlier maturity than other varieties producing similar sized fruit. Determinate. Days to maturity: 70

Mountain Gem

New late blight, TSWV resistant crimson hybrid from Dr. Randy Gardner, NCSU professor emeritus. Vigorous determinate plant bears high quality, deep oblate to flattened globe shaped firm fruit. High yielder with extra-large fruit and clean blossom ends. For market growers and commercial production. Excellent flavor!

Mountain Merit

This AAS Winner has high resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus, late blight and intermediate resistance to early blight! But despite the best disease package of all tomatoes, it nevertheless received its AAS Award because it’s “such a nice all-around tomato, perfect for slicing and sandwiches.” Deep red, firm, 10 to 12-oz. fruits are flavorful, slightly oblate, smooth, uniform and crack-resistant. Determinate but needs support. Days to maturity: 75

Mountain Rouge

Perhaps the best resistance to the dreaded Late Blight yet! This AAS Winner is a sister to blight-resistant but determinate ‘Mountain Merit’, but new ‘Mountain Rouge’ is indeterminate and more productive over a longer season. Fruits are a reddish-pink, beefsteak size that weigh 12 to 14-oz., with a flavor that’s the perfect balance of acid and sugar. ‘Mountain Rouge’ is softer, with the full-bodied sweet-acid balance that heirloom ‘Brandywine’ is revered for, while ‘Mountain Merit’ has a more acidic, less complex flavor. Try both and choose your favorite! Days to maturity: 73

Purple Boy

Best entry yet in the ever more popular ‘dark’ or ‘black’ tomato category! Deep violet, even darker than heirloom favorite ‘Cherokee Purple’, but with a great hybrid disease package and an intense rich flavor possessed only by the grand heirlooms. Flavor is strongly tangy and juicy, with the perfect acid balance. Its compact, indeterminate habit needs staking and benefits from pruning. Days to maturity: 80

Stellar

Perhaps our best all-purpose red slicing tomato in areas plagued by the serious diseases late blight and early blight. Not our biggest nor our earliest, but for broad multi-uses – slicing for sandwiches, cutting for salads, even for sauces and pastes – where taste and flavor are critical and blight resistance is essential, ‘Stellar’ can’t be beat! Bright red, perfectly round fruits weigh 5 to 7-oz. and are produced abundantly by compact, upright plants measuring only 36-in. high. Ideal for pots and patio containers, but best when planted in the ground. Determinate plants need support. Days to maturity: 70-75

Tasti-Lee

Tasti Lee is a breakthrough because of the artful balance of sweetness and acidity, true tomato flavor and rich red color. Here’s your all-star tomato, the 6-9 oz. fruits ready to rev up sandwiches, salads, sauces and salads. Loaded with health-giving lycopene-up to 40% more than other varieties. Determinate.
